Eligibility

See if you qualify in under three minutes.

A short clinical screening based on the same criteria a doctor would apply in person. You will know within minutes whether GLP-1 therapy is appropriate for your situation.

Are you 18 years or older?

GLP-1 therapy is only prescribed to adults in South Africa.

What is your height and weight?

We use this to calculate your BMI, which is the main clinical eligibility marker.

Do you have a weight-related health condition?

This includes high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, raised cholesterol, sleep apnoea, or fatty liver.

Have you tried lifestyle changes already?

Sustainable diet adjustments and regular exercise of any kind in the past year.

You likely qualify.

Based on your screening, GLP-1 therapy may be a suitable option. The next step is a full consultation with one of our doctors, who will confirm eligibility after reviewing your bloodwork.

GLP-1 may not be the right fit right now.

Based on what you have shared, you do not currently meet the clinical criteria for GLP-1 therapy. This usually means a BMI below the prescribing threshold. A doctor consultation might still be worth your time if you have other concerns, or our articles can help you decide on next steps.

This programme is for adults only.

GLP-1 prescribing in South Africa is currently restricted to adults aged 18 and over. We are not able to offer this treatment to anyone under that age. A traditional GP would be the right starting point for younger patients with weight concerns.

The clinical criteria

Who qualifies, in plain terms.

In South Africa, GLP-1 therapy for weight management is generally appropriate for adults who meet one of two criteria. The first is a body mass index of 30 or higher, which is the clinical threshold for obesity. The second is a BMI of 27 or higher in someone who also has a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, raised cholesterol, fatty liver, or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Some patients are not suitable for GLP-1 therapy regardless of BMI. These include people with a history of pancreatitis, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, severe gastrointestinal disease, or anyone currently pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor will go through this in detail during your consultation.

The screening tool above gives a quick indication. The final decision sits with the prescribing doctor after reviewing your bloodwork and history.
